“He’s dead.” When the Doctor arrived at Baker Street, he had expected John
to be sad, very very sad even, but he hadn’t been prepared for this. This
hollow, devastated look in John’s eyes, like nothing could ever be right
again. And for once, the Doctor just didn’t know what to do. Because he
couldn’t just say that it was not true, that Sherlock was, in fact, alive. He
had promised his friend. So he tried to offer what little comfort he could,
knowing that it would never be enough.  Even if John eventually recovered, some
scars would remain forever.
